I learned about prehabilitation while preparing for a presentation I was doing on discharge teaching of the new ostomate. During this time I became acutely aware that teaching ostomy care in the hospital is really not feasible, hence the concept of teaching ostomy care before a planned ostomy surgery came to mind. In researching this concept, I found that it is done primarily in Europe & Canada, and in the US in the Orthopedic world, and focuses on physical therapy and nutritional improvement before surgery. With a body altering surgery, why not teach about the new body you will have? Especially when it entails new daily tasks such as toileting!
