Stoma Doula

A person trained to provide practical advice, information, and emotional support to a person who is going to have ostomy surgery (colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy)

Stoma Doula services were founded to address the extensive needs of people who are facing ostomy surgery. Our healthcare system currently provides 1 hour of education with a nurse prior to planned surgery, and about 2 visits while in the hospital setting. A person with a new stoma needs lots of hands-on practice to master the ostomy pouching systems. A Stoma Doula can help fill the gap in healthcare and provide the much-needed time to prepare an individual for this life-changing surgery. This program will prepare you physically and emotionally on how to live your life with an ostomy bag before you undergo surgery. Both a hands-on course in applying ostomy pouches and education to understand the changes your body will experience. Doula services can enhance your recovery exponentially. Don’t sit back and wait for surgery, be proactive and prepare yourself for the birth of your new stoma!

My case studies have shown that patients adapt to life with a stoma much faster with fewer complications after ostomy surgery. Anxiety is dramatically decreased and skin problems are minimal with prior ostomy education. Patients are able to return to activities of daily living much sooner. If you believe “Knowledge is Power” this program is for you!
